PLACES TO SEE
The Great Chamber at Cutler Point in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument
This amazing alcove is just an hour from Kanab but the deep sand roads require an off-road vehicle to get there. At the trailhead it is just a 15 minute hike around the southern slope and a steep and sandy approach for the last last 5 minutes. When you get to the sand dune inside the alcove walk around the right side of the dune to get to the back of the dune. You can even walk to the top of the dune to see the Arizona Strip and the Kaibab National Forest to the south.
Take 89 east to Johnson Canyon road and then head north. Turn left at the Crocodile Staging area and get on BLM 100. Head west on BLM 100 and then north on BLM 103.
Caution: BLM 100 and BLM 103 are unimproved roads and many sections have deep sand.
The Wave - By permit only!
The Wave (Coyote Buttes North) is a treasure and only the determined (and sometimes lucky) will make the journey. The lottery is competitive and highly restricted but if you are one of the chosen ones, it is a trip of the life time!
The trail starts at Wire Pass which one hour from Kanab. The first 40 minutes are a nice paved road heading east from Kanab and last 20 minutes are on House Rock Valley Road, an unimproved road that in the best of times is bumpy and washboarded, and in the worst of times when wet is very slippery and can be dangerous.
The trail starts across House Rock Valley Road and head left down a dry wash. After walking about 15 minutes, look for trail heading uphill to the right. There is a small sign on the trail reminding everyone that this is permitted area.
When you get on the Wave trail use the BLM map provided to you to get to the Wave area.
Don't forget that the Wave is not the only attraction. Melody Arch, Big Mac and The Alcove are also must-sees!
Coyote Buttes South (CBS) - By permit only!
The shy sister of The Wave (Coyote Buttes North), Coyote Buttes South is majestic and an adventurers dream! Like The Wave, this location is a permit-required area, but is much easier to win the lottery.
About 2 hours from Kanab, CBS has a different entrance than The Wave and requires a 4-wheel drive to get to the trailhead. This is a very remote area and not many other hikers make the journey but it is worth the effort. The rock formations are other-worldly and full of dynamic color and shapes. This is a large geographic area, take the whole day to enjoy it properly and consider hiring a knowledgeable guide for this trip.
White Pocket
There is nothing like White Pocket! When you arrive to this amazing brain-rock formation, its easy to think that maybe you have been transported to another planet! About 2 hours and 20 minutes from Kanab, the last hour of this trip is definitely 4-wheel drive only. The sand is deep, particularly in the summer when the sand is very dry. There is no permit required for this area but bring plenty of water, food and sunscreen. It is a full day of adventure.
Peekaboo Slot Canyon
Located less than an hour north of Kanab off 89, Peekaboo slot canyon is a true local treasure. The Peekaboo trailhead has plenty of parking and a vault toilet. From the trailhead, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is required to navigate through the deep sand (particularly in late spring, summer and fall when the sand is very dry) and takes about 25 minutes from the trailhead to the entrance to Peekaboo slot canyon. The hike is an easy one, less than 3/4 mile each way. As with all slot canyons and dry washes, check the weather forecast for flash flood warnings.
