The Great Chamber at Cutler Point
One of our favorite places to visit just east of Kanab.
Route: Drive east from Kanab and turn left on Johnson Canyon Road. Follow road until you see Crocodile Kiosk on the left. This is a good time to get into 4-wheel high particularly in the summer when the sand is dry and deep.
You will drive on BLM road 100 until you cross a cattle guard with a road immediately to the right. That is BLM road 103. Follow 103 passing Cutler Castle (Red Knoll) on your left and going through two cattle gates. (please close both) .
You will head up a steep hill and park. Drive from Kanab approximately 50 minutes.

The Trail: Park and walk immediately to the right and climb over a low fence.
You will see the trail slopping up and to the right. Follow the trail up to the Great Chamber. Time on hiking trail approximately 20 minutes.

Lava Falls Trail
This is a difficult trail albeit short in distance. My two friends and I tackled it in November 2021 in perfect conditions. We stayed overnight at Tuweep so we could get an early start, got to the trailhead a little before 9 am. The trail down is steep but fun. I am 63 years old so I made a point to take my time. I fell on my ass a few times,it is both steep and rocky) but we hiked down with incidents. At the River we were rewarded with some rafters tackling Lava Falls. We sat on a big rock, watched the show and ate our lunch. Coming back up was a different story. First, when people recommend caching water, take their advice. I carried three liters but should have carried five. This on a day with mostly cloud cover and temperatures never hitting 60. Dehydration caused some leg cramping for me and slowed my ascent. The trail is ok for what is but take your time to look for blazes. All in all a challenge completed, and one that I’m glad I did, but also a one-and- done for me. The volunteers at the entrance were happy to see our return, they even had nickname for us , The Lava Boys! Three hours down ( we got lost once) 3 1/2 hours back.

Note: This trailhead is more than two hours from Kanab and is located in the Grand Canyon National Park. It is 60 miles of dirt road, four wheel drive recommended.

Bunting Trail
This is great trail that gives you an amazing overlook of the surrounding area. Park at the trailhead located on West Stansfield Drive. The first part of the hike is very nice, a little elevation change heading uphill but nothing challenging. Along the way there is a sign with a dinosaur track heading left into a wash, if you have time, take it. As the main trail continues, it starts to get steeper. In dry conditions, it's fine, but it can be slippery when wet. The last section is steep. At the the top there is a saddle with amazing views. If you follow the trail to the left, be aware that in some spots the trail disappears. It is a scramble at times. When you get to the top of the plateau, the trails resumes. All together, its a fun trail that get you to beautiful overlooked in a hurry.
Note: If you decide to take the dinosaur track spur, when the trail dead-ends and immediately on the left is large rock. The dinosaur tracks are on top the rock. Don't climb all over the place looking for the tracks, they are right on right on top of that rock!!!

Middle Route to Buckskin and Cobra Arch
The easiest driving route to the Middle Entrance (to Buckskin Gulch) is the Long Valley Road which is about 45 minutes of Kanab on 89 East. Long Valley Road is next the Paria Outpost sign. To take this route to Middle Entrance trailhead typically requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. From the trailhead the hike to the middle entrance of Buckskin Gulch is easy and beautiful. The climb down to the base of the gulch should not be taken lightly, it is steep with few footholds.
My hike included a cross country trek to Cobra Arch so I also exited the gulch at the same place. This is difficult ascent and I do not recommend it.
Cobra Arch trail is moderate. The arch is beautiful and surrounding rocks are colorful and unique.

Hack Canyon - Trail # 28
From the trailhead to Kanab Creek is 6.1 miles or 12.2 miles round trip. It is certainly NOT 2.6 miles as stated in AllTrails. To get to the trailhead, turn off Toroweap Road (Antelope Valley Rd.) heading east into Hack Canyon. Follow the road east 9 miles until it dead ends at the Hack Canyon trailhead. The trail slopes gently downhill along the Hack Canyon dry creek basin. As you continue the valley walls get higher and higher. This is a beautiful hike winding along a dry wash until you eventually get to Kanab Creek. Kanab Creek was dry in February 2022 when we arrived. There are cairns along the route which I recommend following. They follow an easier route than staying in the creek bed.

Yellow Rock
Drive east on 89 toward Page for about 45 minutes and you will see a sign head heading north for Cottonwood Road. This road is typically in pretty good shape for a dirt road but can be 4-wheel-drive-only when it's wet and muddy. The trailheads along this road heading north include Paria Box, Yellow Rock, Hackberry and Cottonwood. Use a trail app like Alltrails to find the Yellow Rock trailhead. Do not use the Hackberry trailhead for Yellow Rock. The hike begins along Cottonwood Creek and then follows a steep trail heading west out of Cottonwood Canyon. It is a steep ascent with scree and very few switchbacks but the steep section is not very long. The rest of the hike is quite easy and Yellow Rock is visible from the top of the steep section. Aproximately 2.6 miles roundtrip.

Shaman's Gallery via Schmutz Spring Trailhead
I'm super excited about this 12 mile round-trip hike that heads into the Tuckup Canyon to see one of largest petroglyph panels in the Grand Canyon National Park. I'm planning to head there in mid-March, 2022.
